OK, I'm a little late on this BUT there is a reason I
I can't tell you :-)
Report time was 6:00 p.m., students started to arrive around 5:15 p.m. - there was a definite excitement for the first game and band outing of the year. I must tell you how proud I am of our drum majors; Lauren, Kelly and Matt- true leadership quality and the bar has been raised! Congrats to the three of you. Anyway, our parent volunteers were busy getting out the uniforms and hat boxes, the pit crew was busy doing some last minute repairs and getting everything ready. Kids and adults alike were coming in and out of the music office - I LOVED IT!
The Batterie was outside warming up, the wind players were preparing and socializing - all part of the process and marching band camaraderie. 6:25 p.m. came around and it was time to warm up. Major scales as well as some other technique exercises. We played through the most important piece of music that would be performed - Our National Anthem. I tell our band students that this is the only song when EVERYONE is listening, yep there is no football plays happening, or hot dog sales- all eyes and ears are on the band and JrROTC colorguard.
We are ready - Lauren (Senior Drum Major) has the band "fall in" two by two (reminds me of a little Noah action - for those who remember the album "Wonderful" by Bill Cosby). "Eyes With Pride" is recited and you can feel the intensity of 160 strong plus complimentary colorguard.
The drum cadence begins and the band marches to the field. Upon entering the stadium, and reaching the bleachers our drum line turns around and goes back to escort our football team. This has been a tradition for the last 3 years. The football team, cheerleaders, JrROTC, band & colorguard as well as all the parent support groups have created "the event" for Friday Night Football!
After the coin toss, and the presentation of the colors, the band played our National Anthem - flawless! (the way it needs to be). Keene kicked off, and the game began.
During the course of the first half, the band enjoyed various stands tunes with some audience participation. I have to remember to record Victors March for our cheerleaders. At the 5 minute mark(2nd quarter) it was time to prepare for our ignaural outing for the 2010-2011 marching season.
I could feel the nerves of our Freshman as all their hard work was on the line. Our sophomores and juniors were comforting and Seniors - it is bittersweet; as the first/last is about to begin. The band prepares on the track, anxiously awaiting the half when it's showtime! As they march onto the football field, you hear Bill Hughen announce.

DRUM MAJORS IS YOUR BAND READY?!?
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, YOUR ALVIRNE HIGH SCHOOL BRONCO MARCHING BAND and COLORGUARD!
...and so begins the marching season 2010-2011
I must say for the first outing- the music was strong and the drill, well considering that we have 51 newbies the concepts were definitely there. More fundamental work needs to be stressed as well as fine tuning the diagonals.
I would like to remind everyone that we will be working on the 3rd tune this week "Conquistador" - don't forget your dot books!
Ciao!
Mr. B
PS - Tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. is a BON FIRE as AHS prepares for Friday night's away game. PPS. Benson's opening is the 25th at 11:00 a.m. report time is 9:15 a.m. Remember the B's will be singing as well as the band playing.
