So, you probably have been wondering where I have been? Hey, Mr. B how come you didn't blog during band camp or about our Londonderry and Allenstown/Pembroke Old Home Days Parade - Well, things have been hectic at the Bastien household and blogging was not on the front burner.
Anyway, today is the "official" first day of school and I thought I would start here.
I would like to start off by thanking EVERYONE from FOM who volunteered during band camp week and also who helped out for the two previously mentioned parade. Actually, all our FOM volunteers who worked tirelessly during the summer with uniform fittings, and meetings in preparation of the upcoming 2010-2011 school year. If you haven't had a chance to view the pictures of the past events please take a moment - they are GREAT!
It's official 160 students for band (Period I =54 & Period J 106) a far cry from the 27 brave young musicians I started out with in 1996. Colorguard will have a compliment of 10 students.
Today, was "administrivity" day. Yes, the syllabi were handed out for each band period as well as Jazz Band, practice logs and instrumental sectional calendars. Competencies are still the driving force behind instruction in the music department and throughout the Alvirne HS Community. Parents, if you would like to know what your student musician received, especially in band check out EDLINE. I may duplicate the forms on our web page later this week. Again, I want to focus on going green so paper will be limited.
All band students need to practice a minimum of 15 minutes a day, 7 days a week - consistency is what I am looking for. Period I and J band it's all about the marching music and remembering your sets - don't forget your dot books for tomorrow!
Jazz Band - you need the Real Book, NHMEA Jazz All State Etude, and Abersold book 1 & 51.
Tomorrow during the various band periods, the plan is to go outside (yes, in the hot sun) so, bring a hat, sun glasses and HYDRATE as we review the first 20 sets. Tomorrow night we will begin the process of fine tuning and running through the last tune Conquistador.
Tomorrow night's practice will begin at 6:00 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m.
J period band members - do not forget your paragraph as to "Why" you would like to take a leadership role in our program. Also, what position to you want to run for.
I period band members - look around, who are your leaders? Whom do you want to represent your interest on the band council.
Thursday Night (Sept. 2) is our first FOM meeting I hope to see many new faces as well as our seasoned veterans.
Ok - 10 Extra points to anyone who can tell me the name of the tune at the beginning of the blog! This will go under the Analysis Competency.
Ciao,
Mr. B
